INTO THE LIGHT | “Each and every line should car INTO THE LIGHT | “Each and every line should carry a promise that light will conquer darkness and the world will be beautiful again.” ~ George Kordis

POETRY | “The iconographer is not, and must not POETRY | “The iconographer is not, and must not be a mere copyist but is called to become a writer. And just as the true poet does not simply copy the words of others, nor does he use the life experience of others by claiming it as his own, so the hagiographer is called to function, that is, to “write” persons and things of the Divine Economy through his own life experience, whatever it may be. If not, the images will not be complete. They may have the typical characteristics of the saints and compositions, convey the theological interpretation with which many of the elements of the icons are charged, and have the pictorial beauty of good lines and exquisite colors. Still, they will not convey the personal experience of the writer. Something will be missing that makes each picture a poetic event, a fact. To avoid misunderstandings, it should be said here that the icon will not cease to be authentic and venerated if it adheres to the established formalities, but it will lack its poetic part. This lack of the poetical part, however much it may belong to the contributors, to the assets of the icons, does not destroy their authenticity but has consequences for their function, which we may speak of another time.”
~ George Kordis

This video shares a lesson teaching a group of advanced students in the Byzantine system with the Creation of Adam by George Kordis (@gkordis)… Drawing is the core of all our programs, equipping students with the knowledge they need to create new icons. The 2 & 3 year Certificate program exemplifies the importance of “writing”…
A few spaces are open for Fall and applications will still be accepted. See more information shared through our bio.

Peace on the day ~ 🌿

TOWARDS HEAVEN | “It is an authentic icon that a TOWARDS HEAVEN | “It is an authentic icon that attests to the truth of the Gospel, and at the same time highlights how the post-modern world can be perceived within the tradition of the Church, revealing the way to Heaven. Icon painters record their experience of Church life and, based on the tradition of the Church, convey contemporary culture through icons in a mystical way. However, within the icon, contemporary culture and the spiritual circumstances of the post-modern world are transformed and acquire a different meaning. The colors of the big cities and the shapes of contemporary buildings are reflected in icons but at the same time are transformed through the use of rhythm into harmonious ensembles. The pictorial elements of icons are united in harmony and do not aim at overpowering and dominating each other. All elements exist to serve a purpose in life and rejoice in the reality of Christian community life, revealing, without describing, qualities of Heaven.”
~ George Kordis from his essay “Creating a Christian Image in a Postmodern World”, published in a beautiful little book SEEING THE INVISIBLE: Proceedings of the Symposium on Aesthetics of the Christian Image, a compilation of essays published by @stsebastian_press.
