This intensive 4-day residency is designed to immerse students in the essential practice of large-scale drawing, a foundational skill for those pursuing church wall painting and a powerful exercise for any iconographer seeking to deepen their understanding of form, proportion, and compositional flow.

Led by master iconographer Dr. George Kordis, this residency takes place at the renowned Eikonourgia Studio in Athens and is offered as part of the SACRED SPACE program for professional training in ecclesiastical mural work.

About the Workshop
Whether you are preparing to undertake large-scale work in a sacred space or simply wish to experience the dynamic discipline of drawing at scale, this residency offers direct guidance in both technique and iconographic vision. The drawing process is not simply an act of enlargement, but a practice of embodying rhythm, gesture, and harmony—qualities central to the Byzantine visual system.

What the Course Covers:

• Drawing the Human Figure at Scale: Students will learn to construct sacred figures (saints, prophets, angels) in proper proportion, rhythm, and posture for mural contexts.
• Iconographic Composition: Training in organizing space and relationships between figures within a wall painting structure—understanding how to read and build dynamic narrative flow.
• Gesture, Line, and Expression: Emphasis on the expressive capacity of line and the theological meaning carried in posture and form.
• Practical Techniques: Work with charcoal and other dry media on large-format paper
• Discussion and Visual Study: Insight into compositional choices and examples from Byzantine and post-Byzantine mural programs.

This residency is ideal for intermediate to advanced iconographers, visual artists, or students of sacred art who are interested in church wall painting or simply wish to challenge themselves by working on a larger scale. It also serves as a core component of the SACRED SPACE Church-Wall Painting Program for those seeking professional training.
