NEW WORKSHOP ADDED IN THE US!

We are pleased to offer a new 6-day workshop with Dr. George Kordis at the Muscarelle Museum of Art, on the campus of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA.

Good for both beginners or those with more experience, Dr. Kordis will teach his own artistic approach through in-depth demonstrations and detailed exercises in the art, expression and language of the icon using the principles and rhythm of the Byzantine system as a strong foundation for creating beautiful Christian icons. With the opportunity to discuss in-depth the creative process and techniques covering both drawing and painting, this workshop is presented as a valuable time to enter into making your own icon with Dr. Kordis’s oversight.

Along with the daily hands-on creative sessions, there will be short lectures and other visual inspiration and insight addressing iconography, creativity, icon history, theology and always good conversation and friendship.

Hosted on the beautiful and historic William & Mary campus, the unique location provides an interesting place to spend a week in an important Early American Historical destination.  Historical Williamsburg is within a 10-minute walk from the Williams & Mary campus where there are many shops and restaurants.

AGENDA

The residency will meet at 2pm on the first day and have a shortened afternoon session going until 6pm.  During the week, instruction will be held from 9am to 4pm daily for the rest of the residency, with Friday ending at 3pm.

A free open-to-the-public evening lecture with Dr. Kordis to discuss the Byzantine System and Contemporary Iconography is being planned for Tuesday, June 11th —  “Byzantine Painting in the Contemporary Arts World” .  The lecture will introduce a dialogue on the connections between the time-honored Byzantine art tradition and its relationship  in the modern context and will be held at the Williamsburg Public Library on Tuesday,  June 11th at 7pm.

SPECIAL NOTE: We are currently working on adding an additional 2-day “Basics of Egg Tempera” led by Maria Panou for any students wishing for additional exercises and practice prior to the workshop with Dr. Kordis (to be held at the local Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas) for Friday, June 7th and 8th.  If interested, please email keri at info.writingthelight@gmail.com.

PLEASE NOTE SPACES ARE LIMITED AND WILL BE BROKEN INTO TWO GROUPS: Beginners and more Advanced.

Students are responsible for their own meals and lodging (more info below)

Materials

An icon board and pigments are provided.  Each student will only need to bring their own brushes – a list of recommendations will be sent to registered participants.

Please scroll down for information regarding lodging and travel — Students will need to secure their lodging independently.
