We are pleased to offer a 7-day workshop with Dr. George Kordis at the Institute of Sacred Arts of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Seminary, in Yonkers, New York.

Good for both beginners or those with more experience, Dr. Kordis will teach his own artistic approach through in-depth demonstrations and detailed exercises in the art, expression and language of the icon using the principles and rhythm of the Byzantine system as a strong foundation for creating beautiful Christian icons. With the opportunity to discuss in-depth the creative process and techniques covering both drawing and painting, this workshop is presented as a valuable time to enter into making your own icon with Dr. Kordis’s oversight.

Along with the daily hands-on creative sessions, there will be short lectures and other visual inspiration and insight addressing iconography, creativity, icon history, theology and always good conversation and friendship.

Hosted on the beautiful campus of St. Vladimir’s seminary, the location provides the perfect atmosphere with daily Orthodox worship services and is the home to the Sacred Arts Institute which will be conducting their Summer Music Institute during the same time (please see the Institute of Sacred Arts for more information).

The residency will meet at noon on the first day, share lunch, and have a shortened afternoon session going until 4 – 4:30pm.  During the week, instruction will be held from 9am to 4pm daily for the rest of the residency.  Students are welcome to attend church services on Sunday the 23rd, departing afterwards.  An evening event will be planned on the night of Friday the 21st, allowing students to depart in the afternoon of Saturday the 22nd as time after lunch on the 22nd is reserved for finishing and packing up, ending early at 2-3pm.

Meals and Food

Meals will be provided on-campus, including continental breakfast, lunch, and dinner for an additional cost – more information will be shared with registering students, but can be budgeted at $40 per day.

An icon board and pigments are provided.  Each student will only need to bring their own brushes – a list of recommendations will be sent to participants.

Please scroll down for information regarding lodging and travel — Students will need to secure their lodging independently.

Tuition: $850

There will be an additional meals fee for lunch and dinner payable to St. Vladimir’s Seminary once in attendance.

Please fill out the basic form (through the red registration button at the top of this page) and we will email you with the next steps.

All payments will be billed through PayPal by Cinnabar, a part of Iconography Today.  All invoicing will be made in Euros, and conversion made at the time of payment through the payment platform.  A non-refundable deposit will hold your spot — 300 euros (the equivalent of close to $325).  The remaining fee will then be invoiced on March 1st, 2024.  Alternative payment plans can be discussed by contacting Keri at info.writingthelight@gmail.com.

  • The 300 Euros deposit is non-refundable, but transferable if notified prior to March 1, 2024.
  • Should you need to cancel attendance, you will receive a refund for any balance paid minus the deposit with the deposit turning into usable credit towards other programs of Iconography Today only if we are notified prior to March 1st, 2024. If you cancel your attendance after March 15th,  you will forfeit your deposit, and will only be refunded your remaining amount paid. Cancellations occuring after May 1st will be subject to an additonal fee of 100 euros before returning remaining tuition balance. We will work as generously as possible with students, handled on a case-by-case basis with respect to unusual circumstances.
